A man has died and another two people have been injured after being attacked in Paris on Saturday evening.
The deceased is a German national who was among tourists targeted around the Quai de Grenelle, located about 15 minutes from the Eiffel Tower in the French capital.
The attack took place around 7pm GMT when a man attacked a couple with a knife, mortally wounding the German
national, French interior minister Gerald Darmanin said.
He was then chased by police and attacked two other people with a hammer before being arrested.
The 26-year-old suspect was on the French security services watchlist and was known to have psychiatric disorders, Mr Darmanin said.
He told police he was upset because “so many Muslims are dying in Afghanistan and in Palestine” and spoke about the situation in Gaza, Mr Darmanin added.
“The police have just courageously arrested an assailant attacking passersby in Paris, around the Quai de Grenelle,” he wrote.
“One deceased person and one injured person treated by the Paris fire brigade,” he added, urging people to avoid the area.
The anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said it has not yet been put in charge of an investigation.
