A 15-year-old girl has died after being pulled from the sea off Cleethorpes beach in Lincolnshire.
The victim, who has not been named at her family’s request, was airlifted to hospital after she was rescued from the North Sea, but later died.
A teenage boy was also rescued and taken to hospital. He has since been discharged.
The pair were rescued shortly after 7.30pm on Saturday, having been reported missing around 2pm that day.
A search operation was launched involving Humberside police, Humberside fire and rescue services and the coastguard.
Detective Inspector Nathan Reuben, from Humberside Police, said: “Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family at this incredibly difficult time.
“We ask that they are given the time and space to process this tragic news.”
He said the family was being supported by specially-trained officers.
Mr Reuben added the force was working with the fire and rescue services and the coastguard to “fully understand the circumstances of the tragic accident”.
