Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton left Saturday’s 34-10 win over No. 16 Utah because of an injury and did not return.
After the game, Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said he feels good about Morton’s status moving forward but didn’t give a timetable for his return or specify the injury.
Morton was hit on his helmet early in the third quarter when he was scrambling on a second-and-long from the No. 17 Red Raiders’ 7-yard line and was taken to the locker room after colliding with Utah linebacker Johnathan Hall. Officials reviewed the play and determined no targeting foul occurred.
“It’s always tough,” McGuire told reporters after the game. “That hit that he took, man, I know everybody saw it. That was a big hit. We came in, evaluated him. They came back out and said he’s doing really, really good. He’s in a good spot. So, feel good. We’re lucky we have a bye week.”
Morton, a senior who entered this season as one of the school’s top quarterbacks, also left the game in the first half for two plays after a hard hit and was replaced by redshirt freshman Will Hammond. Hammond played in four games (one start) last season, completing 35 of 57 passes (61.4%) for 471 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Hammond had 169 yards passing and 2 two touchdowns and added 61 yards rushing in Saturday’s win.
