Hyundai is on track for its best year ever. Following a breakout sales month in August, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 remains one of the best-selling EVs in the US. However, that’s not the only Hyundai EV that was a hot seller in August.
Hyundai IONIQ 5 had a breakout sales month in August
After back-to-back monthly sales records in July and August, Hyundai Motor North America CEO Randy Parker said the company was “firmly on track for our best year ever.”
Hyundai sold over 88,500 vehicles last month, up 12% year-over-year (YOY) and a new record for August. The South Korean automaker’s impressive run is being fueled by higher demand for its electrified vehicles, including all-electric (EV) and hybrid (HEV) models.
Electrified vehicles account for nearly a third of Hyundai’s retail sales last month, led by the IONIQ and Elentra HEV, both of which had “breakout” sales last month.
Sales of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 surged 61% in August with 7,773 units sold. Through the first eight months of the year, Hyundai has now sold nearly 32,700 IONIQ 5s in the US, an increase of 21% compared to the same period last year.
The IONIQ 9, Hyundai’s new three-row electric SUV, helped boost sales with another 1,016 models sold. Through August, Hyundai has sold 3,102 IONIQ 9s in the US.
Ahead of the updated 2026MY, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 saw higher demand with sales rising 30% YOY to 1,047. However, IONIQ 6 sales are still down 2% YOY through August with 8,318 units sold.
With leases starting at just $179 per month, the new and improved 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is one of the most affordable EVs in the US. Even the larger 2026 IONIQ 9 is listed for lease starting as low as $299 per month.
Both are built at Hyundai’s new EV plant in Georgia, enabling them to qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit. With the federal EV tax credit set to expire at the end of September, automakers are pushing massive discounts, Hyundai being no exception. On Tuesday, GM warned that with the “irrational discounts” on EVs ending, the market is due for a shake-up next quarter.
