Sources: Georgia Tech QB King out vs. Hokies

Georgia Tech starting quarterback Haynes King will not play at Virginia Tech on Saturday, sources told ESPN, as he’s dealing with an upper-body injury. It will mark the second-straight game he’s missed, as he didn’t play against Notre Dame last week.

King has been listed as day-to-day, and sources told ESPN that he’s improved enough where the staff expects him to be able to return for Georgia Tech’s next game against No. 6 Miami on Nov. 9.

The Yellow Jackets have a bye week following the game at Tech, which should allow King time to heal.

Veteran back-up Zach Pyron will get the start for Tech, the fourth of his career. Pyron completed 20-of-36 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown against Notre Dame. He did throw two interceptions. Pyron also rushed for 45 yards on 13 carries.

One of Pyron’s starts came at Virginia Tech in 2022 as a true freshman. He led two fourth-quarter scoring drives to erase an 11-point deficit and deliver Georgia Tech a 28-27 win in Blacksburg. That included a 56-yard touchdown pass and the game-winning touchdown on a nine-yard run.

The final decision on King’s status was made on Friday.

Georgia Tech is 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the ACC. Virginia Tech is 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.

King, a redshirt junior, has emerged the past two seasons as one of the ACC’s top quarterbacks, as he’s completed 71.2-percent of his passes this year, throwing for eight touchdowns and one interception and rushed for 353 yards and six touchdowns.
