Reds 2B McLain may need shoulder surgery

McLain, a first-round draft selection in 2021, is the latest Reds position player to be sidelined over the past several weeks.

Cincinnati also will be without center fielder TJ Friedl, who is out indefinitely with a fractured wrist, and infield prospect Noelvi Marte, who was suspended 80 games earlier this month after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

Newcomer Jeimer Candelario and 2021 NL Rookie of the Year Jonathan India will likely have increased roles in the infield in the meantime. The Reds open the season at home on March 28 against Washington.

McLain, 24, made his major league debut in 2023 and batted .290 with 16 home runs, 50 RBI and 14 steals in 89 games.
