UK wind farms generate a record 22.7 GW of power on a single day

Britain’s wind turbines set a new wind generation record, generating an impressive 22.7 gigawatts (GW) at 7:30 pm on November 11. That was enough electricity to power 22 million homes, the National Energy System Operator (Neso) said.

The new record beats the previous record for wind power generation of 22.5 GW set on December 18, 2024.

Wind provided 43.6% of Great Britain’s electricity on November 11, according to Neso, which kept more than three-quarters of British homes powered.

Add to that another 12.1% of “embedded wind” generation, which supplies power directly to local distribution networks rather than the high-voltage transmission network, bringing the total power from wind to 55.7%. The balance of power generation was comprised of gas (12.5%), interconnectors with other countries (11.3%), nuclear (8%), biomass (8%), hydro (1.4%), and storage (1.1%).

Kayte O’Neill, chief operating officer at Neso, said, “This is a world-beating record, showing that our national grid can run safely and securely on large quantities of renewables generated right here in Britain.

“We’ve come on leaps and bounds in wind generation in recent years. It really shows what is possible, and I look forward to seeing if we can hit another clean energy milestone in the months ahead: running Britain’s electricity grid entirely zero carbon.”

Wind is the UK’s largest source of electricity generation. The country has around 32 GW of wind power on the grid, split almost 50/50 between onshore and offshore turbines, according to RenewableUK’s Wind Energy Database. That includes five of the largest offshore wind farms on the planet.

RenewableUK’s deputy chief executive Jane Cooper said, “On a cold, dark November evening, wind was generating enough electricity to power 80% of British homes when we needed it most.

“This new record high period is another tangible example of wind taking its place at the heart of our clean energy system, as we transition away from the volatile prices of fossil fuels, which caused the energy crisis.”
