The electric pickup we want but can't have in the US

The electric pickup that’s taking South Korea by storm is now launching across Europe, the Middle East, South America, and other global markets.

Meet the Musso EV electric pickup truck

It’s not a Cybertruck or F-150 Lightning. KG Mobility (KGM), a South Korean automaker, is launching its first electric truck across Europe, the Middle East, and other markets as it ramps up its global expansion.

Following its global debut in Germany earlier this month, the heart of Europe’s auto industry, the Musso EV is now arriving in the Land Down Under.

KGM launched the electric pickup in Australia, starting at around $60,000 (AUD), before on-road costs. The Musso EV will be available in both single- and all-wheel-drive variants. Three trim options are offered: standard 2WD, Black Edge, and AWD.

The base Musso EV 2WD starts at $60,000 (AUD), while the Black Edge and AWD variants are priced from $62,000 (AUD) and $64,000 (AUD), respectively, before on-road costs.

According to The Driven, prices were expected to start at closer to $70,000 (AUD). The Musso EV is built for those looking for a practical, efficient, and adventure-ready versatile pickup truck, according to Joseph Lee, managing director at KGM Australia.

“This highly anticipated new vehicle offers KGM Australia the opportunity to lead into the lifestyle electric Ute space,” Lee said.

The prices put the Musso EV on par with BYD’s popular plug-in hybrid pickup, the Shark 6 PHEV, which starts at $57,900.

However, KGM’s pickup is fully electric. Powered by an 80.6 kWh LFP battery, the Musso EV delivers up to 420 km (261 miles) WLTP driving range. It can also recharge from 20% to 80% in as little as 31 minutes.

The electric pickup can tow up to 1,800 kg (nearly 4,000 lbs) and has a ground clearance of 181.4 cm, making it more than capable. It will arrive at KGM dealers later this month, with sales officially set to begin on December 1, 2025.

After launching the Musso EV in South Korea in March, the company said it secured over 3,200 orders in two weeks. The online model sold out in an hour and a half. In its first six months, KGM sold over 6,000 Musso EVs globally.

KGM says the electric pickup is “a new alternative to mid-size SUVs.” Measuring 5,160 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,740 mm tall, the Musso EV is about the size of a Ford Ranger.

Inside, it looks a bit like Hyundai and Kia’s new infotainment setup with dual driver display and navigation screens.

KGM’s new electrified lineup, including the Musso EV and Torres HEV, has helped the company reach its highest exports in 11 years. In October, KGM exported 783 Musso EVs and 603 Torres HEVs.

While the Musso EV is rolling out across Europe, Australia, and other global markets, the US will miss out as KGM has no plans to bring it to the States. Meanwhile, after pausing F-150 Lightning production, Ford is considering scrapping the electric pickup altogether, according to the Wall Street Journal.
