Honda's electric SUV is a hit, thanks to steep discounts

Honda has already sold more Prologues this year than it did in all of 2024. Thanks to discounts reaching upwards of $20,000, Honda’s electric SUV continues to be a hit.

The discounts pile up for Honda’s electric SUV

Although it was one of the few automakers that reported lower US sales in the third quarter, higher demand for Honda’s electric and hybrid vehicles helped cushion the blow.

American Honda, including Acura, sold a total of 358,848 vehicles in the US in Q3, 2% fewer than it did in the same period last year.

Despite “leaner inventories” of some of its most popular models, the company said its electrified vehicles helped push the Honda brand’s yearly sales up 4.1%.

The record electric and hybrid vehicle helped “Honda and Acura manage the challenging market conditions,” according to Lance Woelfer, American Honda’s VP of sales. Woelfer added that Honda’s “investment in the ability to make hybrid-electric vehicles in America, including the Honda hybrid system, has led to record sales of CR-V, Accord and Civic hybrid models.”

Honda’s electric SUV, the Prologue, had a record September, with over 4,500 units sold. Honda has now sold 36,553 Prologues in the US this year, more than the roughly 33,000 it sold in all of 2024.

The federal EV tax credit, which expired on September 30, was the primary reason behind the higher demand for electrified vehicles. However, Honda was also offering additional discounts that totaled over $20,000 in savings for buyers in certain states.

Last month, Honda was offering $17,000 2025 Prologue models nationwide, including a $9,500 financing bonus plus the $7,500 federal tax credit.

If you add in trade-in offers, the 2025 Honda Prologue was discounted by up to $20,300 in California and other ZEV states.

Honda’s latest offer, which runs through November 3, includes $16,550 in lease cash in most parts of the US. The Prologue is not promoted with a $5,000 dealer lease cash bonus, $8,250 in Honda lease cash, and an additional $3,300 loyalty or conquest cash bonus.

While the Acura ZDX will not return for a 2026 model year, Honda confirmed plans to launch the 2026 Prologue.

Although prices have yet to be revealed, a notice sent to dealers, viewed by CarsDirect, suggests the 2026 Honda Prologue will debut with a $6,000 lease or finance offer through Honda Financial Services (HFS). If you add the $3,000 conquest bonus, that’s up to $9,000 in savings.

With Hyundai cutting prices on the 2026 IONIQ 5 to just $35,000, Honda looks to match it as the discounts continue to pile up.
