The legendary Austin brand is reborn as an ultra-minimalist electric roadster that recalls all the thrills of pre-war motoring without the rattle, clank, and soot of pre-war internal combustion. The best part? This isn’t a concept: the new Arrow is on its way to customers!
The Austin Motor Company (most famous for launching the original Mini back in 1959) was born 120 years ago at the Olympia Motor Show in Birmingham. The next year, 1906, saw the official launch of the Endcliffe Phaeton – a 25 hp open-top motorcar that wouldn’t look out of place in front of Toad Hall.
The new-for-2026 model year Austin might not look totally out of place in 1906, thanks to cycle fenders, leather bonnet straps, and boat tail coachwork that conform to the same L7e quadricycle regulations in the UK that make small, fun, and affordable EVs like the popular Citroen Ami and Fiat Topolino possible. And, as for who it’s for, keep thinking of Toad Hall.
The New EV Arrow aims to capture a niche market of consumers who appreciate classic automotive design but are also conscious of environmental impact. By blending retro aesthetics with cutting-edge EV technology, the EV Arrow offers a unique proposition in the crowded EV market.
To that end, the Austin Arrow features a 20 hp rear-mounted electric motor that scoots the lightweight EV from zero naught to sixty in less than eight seconds. That’s about as quick as a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or mid-1980s Camaro Z28, and probably feels a whole lot quicker when you’re riding mere inches from the ground and in the open air, too.
A 20 kWh li-ion battery and 96V electrical system is good enough to take the lightweight (1,330 lb.) Austin Arrow 100 miles per charge. Pricing starts at 36,995GBP (approx. $50,000US), and there are most surely zero plans to bring one to the US.
