A 92-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and rape following the death of a woman in Bristol in 1967, Avon and Somerset Police have said.
The man is from Ipswich, Suffolk, and his arrest follows a forensic review of the case which began last year, police said.
The victim, Louisa Dunne, who was 75, was found dead in her home in Easton in June 1967 by a neighbour.
She had been strangled and raped.
“This is an extremely significant moment in an appalling and distressing case which has remained unsolved for almost six decades,” DI Dave Marchant said.
The suspect was taken into custody for questioning.
Ms Dunne’s next of kin have been contacted by police and DI Marchant added he hoped the investigation could bring them “the answers they’ve waited a lifetime for.”
