Padres place struggling Musgrove (elbow) on IL

The San Diego Padres placed struggling right-hander Joe Musgrove on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to inflammation in his pitching elbow.

Musgrove had one of his better outings of the season Wednesday as he struck out nine in six innings during a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds. He gave up two runs and four hits and walked none.

San Diego recalled right-hander Randy Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso. Vasquez is expected to pitch Tuesday in Musgrove’s spot against the Chicago Cubs.

Musgrove, 31, is 3-3 in eight starts this season but has been roughed up for a 6.37 ERA. He has served up 10 homers in 41 innings.

He won 31 games over his first three seasons with the Padres and tossed the lone no-hitter in franchise history against the Texas Rangers on April 9, 2021.

Overall, Musgrove is 63-60 with a 3.83 ERA in 203 career appearances (169 starts) with the Houston Astros (2016-17), Pittsburgh Pirates (2018-20) and Padres. He was an All-Star with San Diego in 2022.

Vasquez, 25, recently made two starts while right-hander Yu Darvish (neck) was on the injured list and went 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA. He was acquired from the Yankees in the offseason deal that sent Juan Soto to New York.

The Padres also promoted veteran second baseman Donovan Solano from El Paso and optioned infielder Eguy Rosario to the same affiliate.

Solano, 36, is a career .279 hitter with 32 homers and 244 RBIs in 820 career games in 10 seasons with the Miami Marlins (2012-15), Yankees (2016), San Francisco Giants (2019-21), Reds (2022) and Minnesota Twins (2023). He was batting .318 with one homer and eight RBIs in 12 games at El Paso.

Rosario, 24, was batting .250 with three homers and six RBIs in 28 games for the Padres this season.
