A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Chris Marriott, who was hailed as a Good Samaritan by police.
The 46-year-old, a father of two young children, was killed when he was struck by a vehicle as he was helping an unconscious woman in a cul-de-sac in Sheffield.
Several other people were also injured in the incident, including a 32-year-old woman who is currently in a stable condition in hospital.
Hassan Jhangur, 23, of Whiteways Road, Sheffield, appeared at Sheffield magistrates’ court today charged with the murder of Mr Marriott.
He is also charged with five counts of attempted murder.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 2pm on College Close in the Burngreave area of the city.
South Yorkshire Police said Mr Marriott was out walking with his wife and children when he attempted to help an unconscious woman.
As he was giving assistance he was struck by the car, and was declared dead at the scene shortly afterwards.
After his death, his family issued a statement which said: “Chris was a wonderful husband, dad, brother, uncle – and friend to many.
“He devoted much of his life to helping others.
“The circumstances of his death, although tragic and unfathomable to us his family, show the sort of man he was – to go to help rather than to turn away.”
In court, Janghur, wearing a grey T-shirt and with his right arm bandaged, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.
He was not required to indicate a plea to the charges of murdering Mr Marriott, and five counts of attempted murder.
Janghur was remanded in custody and will appear before Sheffield Crown Court on 2 January.
