Nobel Peace Prize awarded to jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi for 'fight against oppression of women'

Jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi has won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2023 for her “fight against the oppression of women” in her country.

Her struggle has come “at great personal cost”, the Nobel committee said.

“She fights for women against systematic discrimination and oppression,” said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee who announced the prize in Oslo.

Ms Mohammadi has a long history of imprisonment. She was arrested in November after she attended a memorial for a victim of violent 2019 protests.
