Marelle Sturrock: Police hunting for partner of pregnant teacher killed in Glasgow find body

Police searching for the partner of a pregnant teacher found dead in Glasgow have discovered a body.

Officers were searching for David Yates after the body of Marelle Sturrock, 35, was discovered at a property in the city’s Jura Street at around 8.40am on Tuesday.

Police said the body is yet to be formally identified but it is believed to be Yates, 36.

The discovery was made after searches of Mugdock Reservoir today. Police were seen at the East Dumbartonshire park and taped off parts of the reservoir.

A murder investigation remains ongoing but nothing has been established so far to suggest anyone else was involved in Marelle’s death, Police Scotland said.

He was last seen on Sunday shortly after 8pm. His white Seat Ateca was discovered on Tuesday at Mugdock Country Park, nine miles away from where Ms Sturrock was found.

Body of man recovered

Detective Superintendent Nicola Kilbane earlier refused to comment on the couple’s relationship or if there had been any prior police involvement.

Police Scotland confirmed today the teacher was 29 weeks pregnant and that her unborn baby did not survive.

Ms Kilbane said: “Our thoughts are with Marelle’s family and friends, along with everyone affected by this tragedy.

“We are providing her family with specialist support at this incredibly difficult time.”

‘Lovely, kind, diligent and considerate’

Parents and carers of pupils at Sandwood Primary School, where Ms Sturrock worked, were told of her death in a letter on Wednesday.

Paying tribute later, headteacher Fiona Donnelly said: “She was a lovely, kind, diligent and considerate person who loved and made time for everyone.”

Ms Sturrock was from the Scottish Highlands but moved to Glasgow when she was 17 to pursue a career in the performing arts.

She later became a primary school teacher after completing her postgraduate diploma in education.

Ms Donnelly added: “We are a school community in mourning and are devastated by the tragic news of her death and pass on our deepest condolences to her family and friends as we all come to terms with our loss.”
