The latest series of The Crown may have received a fair bit of criticism – but the drama surrounding the drama is also garnering new fans who are watching from the beginning.

One such enthusiast is US rapper Cardi B, who tweeted her 26.2 million followers to engage in some discussion about the hit series.

Season five of The Crown, which launched at the beginning of November, covers the 1990s – arguably the most controversial period in the Royal Family’s history – featuring the break-up and affairs of Charles and Diana, among other storylines.

Critics say Netflix should do more to make viewers aware the show is a fictionalised version of real events, and say the timing of the latest series is insensitive when the royals are still mourning the Queen.

But Cardi B appears to be one of the many new fans who have started watching amid all the headlines surrounding the backlash.

“Y’all wanna talk about The Crown?” she wrote on Twitter.

In response to a follower who asked for her “thoughts on Camilla and Charles”, the rapper revealed she is not quite up to speed yet, having only watched 13 episodes so far – with 10 episodes in each series, it sounds like the star was part-way through the second season when she sparked the online conversation.

“I like Princess Margaret… I can see me smokin cigarettes and eating biscuits wit her,” she tweeted.

Cardi B is not the first US singer to enjoy The Crown – with “ultimate superfan” Mariah Carey recently treated to an early screening of the latest series.

The singer shared a picture of herself wearing a tiara and drinking a cup of tea on a sofa with her dogs ahead of the preview.
